The Burial Register

Names entered here include the 2,080 names in the register and vault lists as well as 420 maiden names, most of which come from Cemetery research. The spellings of names in the register have not been changed, even if living family members use a variant.  

Registers are meant to record dates of death and burial, not dates of birth. The Cemetery may be cited as a primary source for burial only. In the Birth column here, b is born, c is born circa, and bp is baptized, but most of these dates come from our research, not from the register. In the Vault column, Vault 000 is used for unidentified vaults.

Reinterments arrived from another cemetery. Removals were sent to another cemetery. Removed to NYCMC means that the remains were transferred to the New York City Marble Cemetery, one block away. All early deaths took place at home, not in hospitals. No cremations were made until the 20th century. Three burials of recent deaths were made in 2024 and 2026.

Register information beyond name, date of interment, vault number, and age varies with each superintendency, but may include vault owner, date of birth, date of death, state of birth, street address at death, cause of death, sexton, and attending physician. The vault listings, with names and dates of interment only, were compiled around 1870; interments after that date were sometimes not added. Most reinterments were never meant to be entered in the register but are in the vault lists.

There is quite a collection of handwritten papers – even 1830 check stubs from construction. All original 19th-century records are in the New-York Historical Society for safekeeping. Because they are in curated, bound volumes, none of these records may be photocopied.
